Practical Steps For Interreligious Harmony

SEMINARS AND CONFERENCES

Being effective tools of communication extending from the sitting audience to the whole society through media, seminars and conferences were preferred as first attempt to make inter-religious harmony a success.

After coming into being in 2000, the Muslim Christian Federation International (MCFI) under the leadership of Qazi Abdul Qadeer Khamosh and Bishop Samuel Azariah is working for interfaith dialogue at national and international levels. The Federation started a series of interfaith seminars and conferences to shape up public opinion in favor of peaceful living with followers of other religions with different point-of-view.

So far, two series of the seminar have been held. One was “INTERNATIONAL PEACE AND ROLE OF RELIGION” and the other was “INTERFAITH DIALOGUE: HOPE FOR HUMANITY”.

The Federation organized hundreds seminars and conferences in main cities of Pakistan, and out of Pakistan in United Kingdom, Nepal, France, Jordan and United States of America to bring people of different faiths closer for peace and love in the society. Dr. Rawan William Archbishop of Canterbury, ICRD President Dr. Douglas M. Johnston, former Prime Minister of Islamic Republic of Pakistan Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, World Council of Churches Secretary General, Chairman Sikh Council of USA Washington Dr. Rajwant Singh, Norwegian Ambassador to Islamabad Janis Bjorg Kanavin, Holland’s Minister for Human Rights, Pite D. Clork, Member National Assembly of Palestine Mamoon Al-Tameemi, ICRD’s Director Syed Azhar Hussain, World Muslim Congress Secretary General Raja Zafarul Haque, Alliance for Restoration of Democracy Chairman Makhdoom Amin Faheem, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan Chairperson Asma Jehangir and others prominent leaders of political and religious parties addressed these seminars. This has brought a positive change in the behavior of the communities that caused a new phase of friendship and love.

The holding of the seminars in different cities of Pakistan and other parts of the world is in process and this will continue in future as well.

The MCFI also reacts on issues of the interfaith importance through media conferences and statements. We immediately reacted to Pope Benedict’s remarks against Islam and conversion threats to Christian families of Charsaddah of NWFP province of Pakistan.

WORKSHOPS

To make interfaith harmony efforts a success, the MCFI organized ‘Workshops of Administrators and Tenior Teachers’ of religious schools. In these workshops, the religious leaders from all Islamic schools of thought participated and discussed Madressah role in the society and need to express tolerance towards, other faiths.

As a step forward, for giving an atmosphere of mutual understanding, we also managed ‘Joint Workshop of Muslim religious scholars and the Christian Pastors’ in pleasant weather and hilly city of Muree, some 30 km away from Pakistani capital, Islamabad. The reports of the both projects have been given in Special Reports.
